Ford Research Furthers Future of In-Car Personalization

in-car personalizationAs connective technology becomes an even bigger part of a car’s interior design, Ford and Intel are coming together to research new opportunities for these technologies to grow. Through a joint research project, called Mobile Interior Imaging—or Project Mobii—the partners are creating systems that range from giving drivers to remotely peer into their car using a smartphone to a vehicle that can recognize their owner using facial recognition software.

“Our goal with the Mobii research is to explore how driers interact with technology in the car and how we can then make that interaction more intuitive and predictive,” said Paul Mascarenas, chief technical officer and vice president, Ford Research and Innovation. “The use of interior imaging is purely research at this point; however, the insights we’ve gained will help us shape the customer experience in the long-term.”

Through a collaboration between Intel ethnographers, anthropologists, and engineers, along with Ford research engineers, Mobii has examined how interior-facing cameras could be integrated with sensor technology to allow for better in-car personalization. Project Mobii will even send a picture of a driver to the primary vehicle owner if the front-facing camera doesn’t recognize him or her.

Ford’s New Water Conservation Plan

water conservationLast year, Ford announced it had reduced per-vehicle water use by 30 percent, two years ahead of schedule. Earlier this week, it released its 15th annual Sustainability Report, outlining a continued commitment to water conservation around the world.

Beginning this year, Ford will ask its high water-use suppliers and suppliers working in water-stressed regions to voluntarily report their water consumption, so that Ford can work with them to achieve reduction.

In addition to having a real effect in these areas, Ford hopes this will encourage other global suppliers to follow suit and significantly reduce their own environmental footprint.

These efforts are not only part of the company’s philosophy that affordable, clean drinking water and access to sanitation are basic human rights—it’s also sound business practice.

“Working in regions struggling with water scarcity will soon make water a costly commodity,” said John Fleming, executive vice president, Global Manufacturing and Labor Affairs for Ford Motor Company. “From a business perspective, understanding future constraints and immediately reducing Ford’s water consumption makes sense.”

Ford Tops Interbrand’s 50 Best Global Green Brands

50 Best Global Green BrandsInterbrand has ranked the Ford Motor Company as the highest-ranking brand in its 2014 list of the 50 Best Global Green Brands. Ford beat last year’s winner and Toyota as well as other heavyweights such as Microsoft, Coca-Cola, and Johnson & Johnson.

Ford earned the top spot thanks to its forward-thinking approach to environmentally responsible and sustainable manufacturing as well as superior transparency about business operations and manufacturing. For example, the waste-reduction and green building efforts highlighting in Ford’s recently-released 15th annual Sustainability Report have played a large part in its list-topping performance.

The 50 Best Global Green Brands are chosen out of Interbrand’s 100 Best Global Brands based on a public perception of the brand’s green practices as well as actual environmental and sustainability performance data collected and analyzed by Deloitte Consulting LLP.

“We are honored to be named No. 1 in the 2014 Best Global Green Brands,” said Robert Brown, vice president, Sustainability, Environment & Safety Engineering. “At Ford we are working to develop the highest-quality products in the market for our customers while manufacturing them in the most environmentally responsible manner and replicating this globally.”

February Reports Show Ford, Lincoln, and Subaru Sales Increases

In the midst of this crazy winter and the unrelenting Polar Vortex, we at Hassett Auto managed to make it through February with good news. Our Ford, Lincoln, and Subaru brands posted sales increases over last year’s reports for the same month.

For Ford, it was the trusty F-Series that was the bearer of good news. The sale of 55,882 trucks marked the best February report the truck has seen in eight years.

In addition, Lincoln sales were up 36 percent compared to the number of vehicles sold during the same period last year.

“Sales surged in the final week, providing us momentum after a slow start to the month,” said John Felice, Ford’s vice president of U.S. marketing, sales, and service. “Ford Fusion continued its strong retail sales performance in the West, outpacing the mid-size sedan segment. F-Series and Lincoln also continued to perform well.”

Subaru, not to be outdone, also reported a successful month. The automaker increased sales by 24 percent over sales from the same period last year with the Forester, Outback, and XV Crosstrek leading the charge.

Ford Sets New Sales Records for Best Year Since 2006

Ford enjoyed yet another year of success as its cemented its place as the United States’ top brand for the fourth year in a row. Retail sales were up 14%, cars up 12%, utilities up 13%, and trucks up 17%, helping Ford to achieve its best December since 2005 and best sales year since 2006.

At the top of the charts stood the F-Series lineup, which extended a now eight-month streak of selling more than 60,000 units per month. Though truck loyalists may claim that competitors’ brands are superior to the F-150, Ford is the only brand that can claim to build not only the best-selling truck in America for the last 37 years, but also the best-selling vehicle for the last straight 32.

The Ford Fusion and Fiesta also posted strong performances, with sales up 27% and 25%, marking new individual records for December as well as for the entire year.

“December was a strong close to an even better year for Ford Motor Company,” said John Felice, Ford vice president, U.S. Marketing, Sales and Service. “We saw strong growth across the entire Ford lineup and made significant gains in the import-dominated coastal markets.

We will suppose for the time being that extensive, sophisticated research is being conducted on just about everyone, and the question becomes:  Are you aware of this, do you want this, and if so, to what extent and how much?

It turns out that we have an easy answer when it comes to considering purchasing a Ford, thanks to its extensive research of customer needs, wants, expectations and awareness, which we’ll share with you now.

Ford Plans 17 New Vehicles for Middle East and Africa

Ford announced that it is bringing some of our favorite homemade vehicles and more to new regions of the world. Now that it has a solid foot in the Asian market (and the North American market, but that goes without saying), Ford sees the Middle East and Africa has the next big automotive growth markets.

The company plans to launch at least 17 new or refreshed vehicles in the Middle East and Africa over the next 24 months.

“Ford and Lincoln sales have grown 60 percent in the Middle East over the past four years,” said Stephen Odell, president of Ford of Europe, Middle East and Africa. “We expect total industry sales in the combined Middle East and Africa region to increase nearly 40 percent to around 5.5 million units by 2020.”

To go along with the announcement, Ford debuted two all-new vehicles for the Middle East—the Ford Fusion and the Ford EcoSport. These vehicles offer an impressive combination of affordability, fuel economy, and driver-assistance technologies.

“Gas and Oil Free” is the New Normal with the Focus Electric

In late 2000, hybrid gas/electric cars were just getting started and the naysayers were already piping up, calling the plug-in electric versions stillborn.  Every new technology needs an incubation period, including building a service infrastructure. Now a dozen years later, it is clear their predictions have happily run out of gas.

In 2012 alone, sales of hybrid and plug-in vehicles such as the Focus Electric, 100% powered by a rechargeable battery, jumped 228%.  While still a small piece of the overall market, it is growing at a much greater rate than other powertrain models, as the economy continues to hiccup and gas prices are steep.
