General Service Schedule

Keeping your car up and running doesn’t involve much guesswork, unless you lost or don’t have an owner’s manual. Fortunately, there’s a general guide you can follow to keep your car properly serviced. Here’s a general service schedule from us here at Hassett Pre-Owned so you can keep your car running at peak performance.


General Service Schedule - Fluid


Drivers would do well to check their windshield washer fluid and engine oil levels weekly, if not more often. Make sure all lights are working, including the dashboard indicator lights. Check tire inflation and condition too.

Three Months/3,000 Miles

Every three months or 3,000 miles, make sure to check the oil, engine air filter, power steering fluid, automatic transmission fluid, and windshield washer fluid. Inspect the battery, cables, belts, hoses, and exhaust as well.

General Service Schedule - Oil

Six Months/6,000 Miles

In addition to the previously listed items, drivers should check their chassis lubrication every six months or 6,000 miles. Make sure to change the oil at this point if you haven’t already.

12 Months/12,000 Miles

Most vehicles are engineered for minimal attention which is why most items can go unchecked for one year or 12,000 miles. Make sure to check the wheel alignments, steering, suspension, coolant, brakes, and wiper blades.

Over caring for your car won’t hurt, but neglecting general service can lead to disaster.

The last snow fall has been plowed away, and now it’s time to start planning your spring road trip!  To wash away the winter dirt and grime from your car and prepare for the spring, we consulted with for some After-Winter Car Care tips.

Clean it up: Wash away the salt residue and dirty streaks with a good car wash.  Make sure to target important areas like the underbody, around the front and rear bumpers and wheel wells.  While you are taking care of this dirty task, check for any rust damage.

Tires: Excessive snow and ice can wreck havoc on your tires, so make sure to check the tread and tire pressure.  Also, even if you don’t need new tires, make sure to get them rotated.  Right now we have a special for a free tire rotation.

Brakes: Makes sure to have your brakes inspected by a professional.  They play a huge role in keeping you safe during the winter and we want that to continue through the spring and summer.  At Hassett Automotive, we are also having a special for a free brake inspection.

Battery: Unless you enjoy being stranded, you should get your battery checked.  Winter weather takes a toll on many of the battery components.  Stop by our dealership for a free battery testing.

Ford Fiesta Makes List of Best Cars for Under 20K

Anyone searching for a new or used car usually only has one thing on his or her mind – value. This little 5-letter word is what it’s all about when it comes to getting a car. People want to be sure they are getting a car that will run strong for many years down the road and not break the budget on gas or repair costs.

With that said, New York Daily News recently did an article on the top 5 cars for under $20,000, and guess what? The Ford Fiesta made the list. That’s right. Coming in at a starting price of $13,200, the Ford Fiesta not only made the list, it came in thousands of dollars under to $20,000 limit. According to NY Daily News, “It’s always a party when you can get good drivability, impressive gas mileage, and sedan or hatchback options, both for under $15,000. Inside the subcompact Fiesta, there’s room for people over 6 feet and enough price-controlled options to keep drivers of any height happy on their daily commutes. Speaking of happiness, a return of 39 highway MPG (or 40 with the SFE Package) is enough reason alone to keep Fiesta drivers jolly all year long.”

Subaru Unveiled the 2014 Forester!

Just last month at the LA Auto show, Subaru unveiled the 2014 Forester (see some pictures, here). This new small SUV has everything you love about Subaru, including the legendary Subaru Boxer engine, but now it’s even greener! According to Subaru’s website, “Subaru Forester has always embodied the right-sized power, control and versatility that owners love. Now, it also represents a green-minded, fuel-efficient small SUV, as the 2014 Subaru Forester is a Partial Zero Emissions Vehicle and built in a zero-landfill plant.”

You can expect to see the all new 2014 Subaru Forester at Hassett sometime next year.

However, if you just can’t wait that long to have a Forester in the garage, we have plenty of 2013’s on out car lot right now! Some of the key features in the 2013 model include symmetrical all-wheel drive, up to 8.9 inches of ground clearance, Vehicle Dynamics Control, and available High-Intensity Discharge (HID) headlights. The Ford F-150 Gets the Job Done

When it comes to getting the job done, more guys trust the Ford F-150. But don’t take it from us; take it from David Koonce, President of General Shelters. General Shelters is a company located in heart of Texas forest country that, since 1973, has been building every type of portable and modular building imaginable. And what truck do they use to haul buildings (literally) across the state to their customers?

You guessed it. The Ford F-150.

See, David used to be a GM guy, but after driving a short distance in the GM truck with a building attached to it, he realized it just didn’t have the power he needed. However, in his F-150, David says, “the horsepower and low-end torque is there. I feel confident in being able to go anywhere with this.”

Every Long Islander suffered in one way or another from the devastation caused by Hurricane Sandy, including all of us at Hassett Automotive of Wantagh. The one heartening aspect of this deadly storm was the way people across the Island came together to help each other get through those cold, dark days. Of course, our hearts go out to those still suffering in Sandy’s aftermath, along with hopes for a quick recovery.

At Hassett, we’re making it easier for our customers, and others, who experienced damage to, or the total loss of, their car, truck, or SUV during the storm — some suffered multiple vehicle losses —to get back on the road. We call it our “Hurricane Sandy Disaster Relief” programs, and they’ve been set up to make it more affordable to replace vehicles that are no longer operable.

2013 Ford Fusion Walkaround

Earlier this month, the all new 2013 Ford Fusion was delivered to our dealership and we had a great time showing it off to so many people during the “Go Further with Ford” night. Subaru Ranks High In Brand Loyalty Study

As much as some car brands would like to deny it, brand loyalty is one of the most important things a brand can have. See, companies can spend as much money as they want on advertising to get you to buy their product, but at the end of the day, if you’re not satisfied with what you bought, especially when it comes to car, you’re probably never going to buy that brand again. However, on the other hand, if a car brand leaves you satisfied and actually looking forward to driving, then chances are you will buy that car brand once again when the some comes.

With all that said, according to a recent study done by the friendly folks over at, Subaru has some of the most loyal customers in the automotive industry with almost 50% of Subaru users trading in their old Subaru’s for a newer one (47.9% to be exact).
