Don’t Forget Your 4th of July History on Independence Day

How brushed up are you on your 4th of July history? Before you get into the fireworks, read this summary of what happened on the fateful day:

The original thirteen colonies first declared their independence from England all the way back in July 4th, 1776—the date that would become known as Independence Day from then on and Americans have celebrated ever since.

Of course, the colonies had been struggling in various conflicts with England for some time before they finally convened a Continental Congress that summer, leading up to the famous words from Richard Henry Lee of Virgina:

“Resolved: That these United Colonies are, and of right ought to be, free and independent States, that they are absolved from all allegiance to the British Crown,” words that began the drafting of the Declaration of Independence.

A statement concerning the concept was first put together by John Adams, Roger Sherman, Benjamin Franklin, Roger R. Livingston, and Thomas Jefferson, with Jefferson himself physically writing the document.

Discussions on the document continued through all of July 3rd and late into July 4th, when the Declaration of Independence was officially adopted, with nine of the thirteen colonies voting in favor. At this time, John Hancock signed the document with his famous autograph.
